Role Overview
The company is seeking a Senior Safety Manager to lead and oversee all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) activities for large-scale data center construction projects in Virginia. This role represents the owner-operator in the field and is responsible for driving a proactive, best-in-class safety culture across complex, mission-critical construction environments.
The Senior Safety Manager serves as the senior on-site safety leader, ensuring projects are executed safely, compliantly, and in alignment with company standards, OSHA regulations, and long-term operational objectives. Limited regional travel to support other projects may be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and independently manage all on-site safety activities for large-scale, mission-critical data center construction projects.
- Represent the owner-operator on-site, ensuring contractor and subcontractor safety performance aligns with company standards, regulatory requirements, and long-term operational goals.
- Develop, implement, and enforce site-specific Safety and Health Plans, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and risk mitigation strategies.
- Oversee all subcontractors and trade partners, enforcing compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and industry best practices.
- Partner closely with Construction, Project Management, Development, Design, and Operations teams to integrate safety into all phases of project execution.
- Lead site safety mobilization, orientation, and ongoing training programs for all site personnel.
- Conduct regular site safety audits, inspections, and observations; track findings and ensure timely corrective actions.
- Lead incident investigations, root-cause analyses, and reporting, including near misses, recordables, and serious incidents.
- Facilitate daily safety huddles, toolbox talks, subcontractor safety meetings, and pre-task planning sessions.
- Maintain accurate and timely safety documentation, including logs, inspection reports, training records, and regulatory filings.
- Proactively identify high-risk activities, emerging hazards, and trends; implement preventative controls and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support commissioning, integrated systems testing (IST), and turnover activities by ensuring safe work practices during critical operational phases.
- Promote and actively participate in the company’s Safety and Health Management System (SHMS).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 8+ years of construction safety experience, with significant exposure to data centers or other mission-critical facilities.
- Proven experience leading safety programs on large, complex construction projects.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, construction safety standards, and risk management practices.
- Experience managing safety performance across multiple trades and subcontractors.
- Familiarity with mission-critical environments, including critical power, cooling systems, and high-risk construction activities.
- Proficiency with safety and construction management software; Procore experience preferred.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and influencing skills.
- High level of integrity, accountability, and attention to detail.
- Willingness to work on-site in Virginia with limited regional travel as required.
