November marked Men's Mental Health Month, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the mental well-being of men. In the UK, where 1 in 8 men face common mental health issues such as anxiety or depression each week, this month serves as a reminder of the challenges many individuals go through. Shockingly, suicide is the leading cause of death for men aged 20 to 49 in the UK. Movember, initiated in 2003, plays an important role in addressing these issues, having funded over 1,250 men's health projects worldwide.
To show our support and raise awareness this month, a group of our employees from across our global offices joined forces to form a fundraising team for Movember. Throughout the month, this dedicated group organised a series of events that catered to a wide range of happenings, ensuring that everyone had an opportunity to participate and contribute to this important cause. Together with our employees, candidates, clients and relatives, we have raised £2,090 for the Movember charity - here is how our fundraising team made it happen:
In support of the Movember charity, Thor recently organised an after-work Ping Pong competition hosted by Malin to help raise money. Those who wanted to take part in a “friendly” game of doubles contributed a small participation fee.
As well as our competitors there were lots of supporters cheering on the players, it was great to see so many getting involved and generously donating to this important cause.
Thor also hosted a vibrant pub quiz at ‘Tia Maria’ a local bar and kitchen, with Ebba and Alex as our quiz masters. Most of our London office formed small teams to put their knowledge to the test and raise money for an important cause.
The quiz turned into a karaoke session with teams competing for extra points to be crowned the winners. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are eagerly anticipating next year’s quiz.
60% of men have never spoken to a healthcare professional about their mental health.
Several Thor employees have also challenged themselves physically with a 60km walk or run. A weekly running club on Mondays was formed so that they could run together during lunchtime, which was a great way of keeping each other motivated. It was a great way to not only raise awareness and support for men’s mental health but also to focus on their well-being.
As we reflect on the month's activities, we want to thank everyone who has participated, donated and supported our events. With 1 in 8 men facing a mental health issue each week, the roles of charities such as Movember in breaking the stigma surrounding men's mental health is imperative. We will continue focusing our efforts on supporting all who are affected by mental health challenges!
