Marcus joined Thor 10 years ago as a Recruitment Consultant. Over the past decade, he has propelled his career and made a significant impact on the wider business. As one of our Managing Directors, he currently leads our Engineering Sales Division. In our latest blog, we sit down with him to discuss his journey and future plans at Thor.
It makes me feel so old to say this, but the way we use LinkedIn has definitely changed! It used to be just a tool to find names—we'd never dream of contacting people there first. Ten years ago it was all about striking with a sexy hook and some good sales. Proper adrenaline-pumping, addictive stuff.
Without doubt, transitioning from being an out-and-out biller to a manager was a tricky period. Understanding how to add value to the lives of 10+ people, rather than just feeding your own ego with deals, is a tough mindset shift. The moment you realise you've had your time and it's now time to develop others is the best moment you will have in your career.
No doubt, it’s the relationships I’ve built with people over such a long period that keep me motivated. These individuals are not just colleagues, but teammates and friends. I have never been one to let down my teammates!
Professionally, you have to have an identity and a process. Learning what to say and when to say it is one thing, but earning respect for it is another. This applies not just to candidates and clients, but also internally. Trusting that process brings stability, predictability, and consistency. It’s important to evolve and innovate, especially in STEM markets. However, your core principles should never change.
Personally, I have learned that everything is earned and nothing is given. If you want it, you have to go and get it. Even when you get it, it can be taken from you—but the more you practise, the luckier you get.
I feel privileged to be in a position to help young people thrive in their careers.
Only the most innovative, hard-working, process-driven, and engaged will succeed. I will do all I can to help people who demonstrate those virtues day in and day out. There are some incredible people who work for our business, and I love seeing them become successful. All I can ask for in my role is to provide people in the business with some of the experiences I have had. The personal rewards will follow!
