This year's International Women's Day theme has a specific focus on moving from equality to equity. While equality aims to ensure that everyone has the same opportunities, equity recognises that different groups face different challenges and may need different resources to achieve the same outcomes.

In this blog post, we will share some of the ways in which we are working towards this goal and highlight the importance in adapting your hiring strategy to encourage and support women to pursue careers in STEM. To achieve our commitment to inclusivity, we have implemented a number of strategies, including:

Building a diverse candidate pipeline:

We actively source and engage with candidates from underrepresented groups to ensure that we have a wide range of talent to choose from.

Training and development

We provide ongoing training and development opportunities to all our employees to help them grow and succeed in their roles. We are also committed to educating ourselves about unconscious bias and how to better ally with underrepresented groups.

Flexible working arrangements

A 2019 study by the Center for American Progress found that 31% of women who left the workforce cited inflexible work arrangements as a primary reason for doing so. This is often referred to as the "motherhood penalty," as women are more likely than men to take on caregiving responsibilities for children and elderly relatives.

Deloitte found that 69% of women consider flexibility to be a key factor when evaluating a job offer, and that 75% of women believe that flexible work arrangements can improve gender diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

We offer flexible working arrangements to ensure that our employees can balance their work and personal lives.

Inclusive language:

A recent study revealed that applications from women dropped by 10% for roles that used male-targeted words. We use inclusive language in all our job postings and communications to encourage a diverse range of applicants.

Unfortunately, there is still a lot of work to be done - statistics show that there is still a significant gender gap in leadership positions, with only 7.4% of Fortune 500 companies being led by women.

At Thor, we believe that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords, but elementary to our company's culture and success. We are committed to breaking down these barriers and empowering everyone to reach their full potential.
