It is an exciting time to be a part of Thor as our company recently celebrated our 10 Years Anniversary, flying out our entire global offices to Cannes, France for our Annual General Meeting. In this blog post, Danny Rowe from our London office shares his experience meeting and connecting with his colleagues from US and Scandinavia for the first time since the pandemic.

Let’s set the scene: 120 + employees from our London, New York, Stockholm and Copenhagen offices all flown out to Cannes in the French Riviera- an all expenses paid trip to celebrate Thor Companies huge 10 year anniversary.

A trip full of collective “firsts” including:

• Many of our UK and US colleagues getting to meet for the 1st time.

• For many of our American-based colleagues their 1st time visiting France/ Europe.

• 1st trip abroad with an employer.

• 1st time on a plane and leaving the country since the pandemic.

Thursday

Arriving on the Thursday, we had the whole day and evening to explore Cannes, get in some much needed sunshine and enjoy the unreal Cannes scenery with our colleagues. It was personally my first time visiting Cannes/ South of France and I’ll 100% be visiting again. The beaches, sea temperature, night life and vibes in general were all fantastic!

I would say it was the “calm before the storm” before the company AGM the following day, but realistically we all know how the first night on any holiday goes when everybody is so excited.

Friday:

The theme of this years AGM/ 10 year anniversary was “Reflect, Adapt, Disrupt”. The dress code was Cannes Film Festival and we love any excuse to dress up here at Thor Companies! Despite some sore heads and angry looking sunburn (guilty) everybody came dressed to impress, looking dapper/ ravishing in their outfits, ready to reflect on the Thor Companies journey to date.

REFLECT

We took a moment to reflect on contributions of past and current events. When Thor was established in 2012, they were literally three individuals in a small wardrobe sized office looking to challenge the status quo of the industry while overcoming huge obstacles.

In the middle of difficulties lies opportunities and with the oil crash in in 2015 Thor established new brands such as Thor Life Sciences, Thor Infrastructure/Engineering and Thor Teknologi. We’ve grown into new geographic markets and expanded our global presence while priding ourselves on having a fun, dynamic, supportive and entrepreneurial environment.

A huge part of our culture has always been celebrating our success, with bi-annual trips with #ThorOnTour visiting places such as Verbier, Ibiza and Valencia. On our trips we do not just take top performers, as a part of our value of “Winning Together” we incentivise our entire team to grow together and celebrate success.

ADAPT

Having understood the ever evolving and unpredictable nature of the industry we emphasized heavily on the need to adapt to the demands of a fast paced global society.  According to Director Chris Singleton, “It is no coincidence that our agile internal functions have received huge investment over the last few years and are well on their way to becoming able to handle our future growth on an international scale.”

As a part of our growth plan, we are continuing to explore new and emerging markets while giving our consultants all of the tools to succeed and develop in their career.

DISRUPT

Anything but ordinary, our consultants are looking to evolve and challenge the status quo!

According to Chris Singelton, “Stepping into this new chapter we chose to disrupt the conventional internal workflows and form a vision for our future that will push us to streamline our goals and enhance our efficiency as a global business”

AWARDS

As with any annual company event, we finished up the AGM by celebrating individuals and collective teams success stories and accomplishments over the course of the previous 12 months. Each team had something unique to celebrate, while highlighting accomplishments such as “Rookie of the year”, “Top Biller Perm/Contract EU/US”, “Function of the year” and “Most impactful contribution to the business” etc.

This was a personal highlight for me for a few reasons. (Incoming self brag alert) I was pleasantly surprised to be awarded the “Most Impactful Contribution to the Business EU” with my US-based colleague Maddie Holmes picking up the same award for her fantastic work scaling the NY and LA offices.

I was also absolutely buzzing to see individuals I can proudly say I’ve introduced into the business to also receive awards for their achievements at Thor. A very fulfilling and rewarding day all around!

Receiving this award was not only the highlight of my trip and 2021 in general, but is also quite comfortably the proudest achievement of my career (so far). Winning an award that recognises your hard work and efforts is a massive accomplishment in itself but to do so infront of 120+ colleagues, in a setting like Cannes, during an occasion like Thor Companies 10 year anniversary will honestly be a moment and memory I cherish for the rest of my life.

The evening was capped off with a very scenic meal on the beach as the sun set behind the distant mountains. This was then followed up by Thor having exclusive access to a rooftop terrace bar for the evening and of course- a free bar to celebrate an incredible day!

Saturday

How do you top that Friday? How about a day of relaxation at a privately rented beach club with food and (even more) free alcohol! Personally this was my favourite day of the trip. I feel very fortunate to work alongside so many genuine and top quality human beings.

Sunday:

Home time! Nothing really to report here although there is an absolutely incredible and hilarious video that was recorded on the flight home surveying the damage Cannes had inflicted on the UK office. 1000 likes on this blog post and maybe we’ll share it…

Special shoutout to our global operations team. I’ve had multiple people from other companies comment about how booking this trip must have been a logistical nightmare - and they’re probably right. 120 staff, multiple locations and flights, finding venues and restaurants to cater to so many people etc. The trip was absolutely flawlessly booked, incredibly organised and most importantly, was unanimously loved and enjoyed by everybody that attended!
